Like Corruption And High Taxes?

Vote the same people back in.

Obviously, NYS voters love the corruption and the dysfunction of NYS. You like the high taxes. You love that businesses move out of our state - and take our college graduates with them.

You must! You keep voting the same people back in! Do you honestly think they are going to finally "stand up" to the "leaders" after 10, 20 years in the Senate or Assembly? You really believe that? Honestly?

Having just read the appalling report from the NYS Inspector General - a 316 page report that calls the "handling" of the bidding process for choosing a video lottery terminal operator for Aqueduct Racetrack - corrupt and a "political free-for-all" - I am amazed at our apathy, and our ignorance.

Albany is FAILbany BECAUSE of those very same people you vote into office year after year after year.

This article in Capitol Confidential says:

"The ill-advised method which allowed the state’s top three elected officials to pick Aqueduct’s
slot-machine vendor was created in 2008 by then Governor Eliot Spitzer, then Senate Majority
Leader Joseph Bruno and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. In the process, the statute removed
lobbying restrictions and allowed campaign cash to flow to the decision makers.

“This process was doomed from the start, and at each turn, our state leaders abdicated their
public duty, failed to impose ethical restraints and focused on political gain at a cost of millions
to New Yorkers,” Inspector General Joseph Fisch said. “Unfortunately, and shamefully,
consideration of what was in the public’s best interest, rather than the political interest of the
decision makers, was a matter of militant indifference to them.”"

In this article from the Albany Times Union , it states:

"The report also faulted Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for employing the tactic of setting conditions for AEG's approval that he knew the firm could not possibly meet, rather than rejecting their bid outright. "It may have been good politics, but it was not in the public interest," Fisch said of Silver's behavior."

At least Skelos (Senate Republican minority leader) tried to get a hearing, but, according to this article from Capitol Confidential the Dems never responded! (Back in February, Skelos sent a letter to Sampson requesting public hearings.)

Now - why didn't anyone in the Assembly "stand up" and "go against" the speaker and ask him to reject the bid instead of playing those games? Some senior members *cough cough joe morelle cough cough* have said time and time again that they have stood up against their own party. Uh huh. You can't tell me that none of them knew what was going on. Especially senior members of the assembly .

Maybe it's because this is "business as usual" for Joe Morelle - he doesn't stand up to Silver. He doesn't want to remove him as speaker. All of his endorsement interviews show he doesn't want Silver removed. When asked directly by the D&C if he "supports leadership change in the chamber to which you seek election or re-election?" he doesn't answer yes or no. Joe Morelle says: "I will support a Speaker who is committed to the Upstate economy and addressing our unique needs."

What kind of answer is that? A 20 year career assemblyman's answer loyal to Sheldon Silver....that's what that is.

Always remember - Joe is on your side. He is watching out for you. That's why he kept you out of meetings he and Neil Breslin had with the insurance industry, trial lawyers, the Medical Society and the State Insurance Department to discuss "reforms" of no-fault auto insurance laws. Morelle and Breslin said the private meetings were necessary to exchange ideas freely.

In meetings to discuss reforms - he kept you out of the process. Nice.

Here's the article.

From the article:

"Chairmen of the Assembly and Senate insurance committees - Joseph Morelle and Neil Breslin - have been conducting numerous closed door meeting with the insurance industry, trial lawyers, the Medical Society and the State Insurance Department to discuss "reforms" of no-fault auto insurance laws. Representatives of consumers have been excluded and fear any changes will not protect ratepayers. A reporter attempting to attend one of the sessions, in Room 123 of the Capitol, was asked to get out."

"Morelle and Breslin said the private meetings were necessary to exchange ideas freely."

They couldn't exchange ideas freely in front of the consumer representatives or reporters?

Why? Aren't they supposed to be representing us? Or are they representing the multitudes of campaign donors? Behind closed doors.

When Joe Morelle had the chance to "stand up to" and tell his buddy Silver, "Hey, Shelly, why not reject the AEG bid? C'mon. It's not in the best interests of my constituents." - He didn't.

When Joe Morelle had the chance to be transparent and let in consumer reps and reporters to meetings with Insurance industry etc. to discuss "reforms" of insurance laws - He didn't.

When Joe Morelle "voted against the budget" and wanted to persuade the Senate to pass the budget - was he thinking of the taxpayers? No, he was concerned about "imperiling the political fortunes of the legislature."

You get the government you vote for and deserve.

Happy same ol' same ol' on November 3rd.

Oh my blue box was so happy today because of course I received another Joe - 20 year Morelle mailer today! The recycling plant thanks him too.

Great blog Jax!

The Irondequoit Post endorsed Morelle and they had the nerve to say quote - "We also see him (Morelle) as too cozy with — and eager to excuse — Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, arguably the state’s most powerful elected leader and biggest hurdle to reform."

HILARIOUS! We know from Morelle's other quotes in the D&C that you have on the blog that Morelle has no intention of replacing his Best Bud Shelly but the Post ignores that fact and endorses him. They say they see him as "to cozy and eager to excuse Silver."

They are talking out of both sides of their mouth. Who does Morelle know over at the Post? If they didn't want to endorse Mark Scuderi they should have not endorsed anyone then. They are admitting that Joe is in tight with Silver and Silver is a HUGE problem! DUH!

Love this quote from your blog Jax - "Morelle and Breslin said the private meetings were necessary to exchange ideas freely."

Is that a laugh and a half or what? Really, the private closed door meetings were for the exchange of ideas? What a bunch of BULL!

But all of these cardboard pictures of Joe with pumpkins and Irena etc. erase the last 20 years.

The 18 years that he voted for the budget, closed door meetings, cozy Silver relationship, unemployment at 9.6% and Monroe County having the highest property tax in the NATION!

Those mailers erase everything.

Maybe we could get Joe into one of those sweeter than sweet commercials with the bunnies. Ha
Joe Morelle with the bunnies

So imagine pasting Joe into this commercial it changes everything doesn't it?! Hahahaha
A commercial coming soon to you. :)

Noooooo! The poor bunnies!

He has never stood up to Silver.

When Joe wanted to be Comptroller in 2007, and stepped down from the MCDC to pursue that and then the Assembly picked DiNapoli instead - Silver gave him the "gift" of the chairmanship of the Insurance Committee as a consolation prize.

Joe will always serve Silver. Downstate politicians (as long as Silver is in charge) will always get those coveted positions - and Joe wants one of 'em. Silver or Cuomo will appoint him to something if he wins.

Why not? He's done such a great job of standing up to his own party and working for the taxpayers.

They system is broken, it's the career politicians in that broken system that make the laws that make or break our State.

I guarantee all of them will be elected again.

We don't learn. We are so selfish and ignorant and apathetic.

I'll give it 2 more election cycles, and if things don't start changing, I'm going to try to convince the hubby to move out of NYS. It's to the point now where I can't take it. It's embarrassing.

For Governor....oy....you know I like Cuomo, and I'm more than likely going to vote for him (there is the hooker ya know.....)but I was seriously thinking of writing in "Chris Christie" for Governor just to be an asshole - if I had any balls whatsoever, I would do that.

Did you hear that NYC sent out sample ballots that were wrong? Here's the AP YouTube Link

I guess a legal scholar from New York University's Brennan Center for Justice caught an error in the instructions on the ballot. It tells people to fill in the circle ABOVE the candidate's name......but you're supposed to fill in the circle BELOW the name.

There's some other confusion with the lines for Governor too.

I guess Assoc. Press tried contacting the city BOE, and they haven't returned any calls for comment.

I know you are right Jax we can't do that to the bunnies. :)

I'm not sure if all will be elected again. You never know. I know people are apathetic but they finally have started to notice something's wrong. Baby steps. I'm hoping those baby steps may equate to a few entrenched career politician's saying bye-bye November 2nd.

Hey, you never know.

I'm nervous enough about this whole new voting system, now this. Well this new development really gives me confidence - NOT!

I like my curtain and levers. I shudder to think of some controversy over the vote - like the hanging chad.

Oh the memories.

Kind of off subject but it's a reminder of how politician's do these grand gestures before elections.

Here's an update on grants for those inquiring minds. Ha

Remember back when the Heyman team was running for re-election? Dan Maffei had a press conference right before the election at McAvoy Park with Heyman to accept a $400,000 grant. Well, I was always under the impression that this grant was a $400,000 grant.

Come to find out it's a matching grant. I don't remember anyone ever advertising this fact. So BIG deal, if we don't have the money to spend which we don't, we can't have the grant.

So how does that amount $400,000 get listed under all of this grant money that the Heyman company received? We didn't receive it because we have to spend $400,000 to collect $400,000.

I just love when politician's leave out the fine print. ;)

Ha - would have been nice to have known that.

I did a blog about it....Link.... the MPN article did not say anything about it being a "matching" grant. I do remember there was something in there about hiring a "Deputy Commissioner of Public Works for Sustainability", and the $186k salary & bennies would be paid by the grant for 18 months.

I swear I read in meeting minutes (from April I think) of this year that Larry said they used the grant from Maffei - so - I'll have to look for that later. Gotta take care of some laundry, make some dinner, and play with the puppy.

The little shit chewed up two of my shoes - one each from two different pairs! He couldn't eat a matching pair....nooooooo. If he wasn't so darn cute I'd be really mad!

Found the meeting minutes from April 20th where Larry talks about the Energy Efficiency Conservation Environmental Block Grant ($440k) - Larry doesn't say anything about it being a "matching" grant though - the resolution was for BSE to help with the quarterly federal reporting that is required for this grant.

I'm assuming it's the same grant that Maffei got from the stimulus, even though Larry does not mention that either - it's the same EECEBG they talk about in the article from last year - so....I think it's the same thing.

Link - page 4 - at the bottom of the page.

Just wanted to let ya know that the NYC Board Of Elections Chief has been fired for the ballot mistakes, and problems at the primary.

NY Times had an article yesterday about it.
