A lot of "good stuff" in today's I-Post. A Q&A featuring each candidate responding in 100 words or less, a sampling of their ideas, and comments on issues facing the town.
Unfortunately, Deborah Essley's comments seem to have been edited even though
they were exactly 100 words, so I've added the comments that were edited out of the paper's version below the article.
(Comments not included in Deborah Essley's answers are in bold red below.)
• The redevelopment of Medley Centre appears to be stalled. What are the town’s options?
The Medley Centre situation is very alarming to our taxpayers. With millions of dollars of lost revenue, the deal was made with a lack of due diligence, refusal to disclose financing and disregard for public input. Now with a missed payment of $500,000 to the town, I say it’s time for more than a “gentle reminder” to developer Congel. Pay up or get back on the tax roll. Let’s encourage the highly reputable Rochester Broadway Theater League to come to the negotiating table and give us the chance to make Medley Centre a place we all can be proud of.
(100 words exactly in the above and below answers - why edit that out?)
• Is the dream of a community center just that? How could it be funded? Should it include a consolidated library?
Every great accomplishment starts with a dream. For the Community Center to be realized, we must have clear plans with financing options developed whether private, public, or grants and communicated to our residents. We must present that plan to the voters with all price tags clearly attached. As for our highly frequented libraries, there is no question that they need major updating. The Town is divided on whether to consolidate or revitalize the existing ones. Passions run high on both sides. Citizens must choose by a referendum vote if one or both of these projects are to become a reality.
